Happy 40th Anniversary to one of my favorite restaurants! I became familiar with Mario’s through blogging and even struck up a friendship with Fil Benitez (Hi, Fil!). After my first Mario’s experience, I became hooked and went back several times sans events. I came back again when they celebrated their 40th year.

Served that night were the following: Oyster Rockefeller, Gambas con Chorizo, Mario’s Caesar, Paella Valenciana, Mango Jubilee and assorted cakes from the cart (I chose Toffee Sansrival which was sooooo good!). For main entree, there were four choices: Corned Beef and Cabbage, Bacalao a la Vizcaina, Salpicon de Mar Y Tierra, and Glazed Pork. I picked the latter because but it was overcooked so I requested for a new one which came out better. Still, I much prefer how Santol Chutney Glazed Pork Chops was served before.

Chef Anton Benitez talked about Mario's future plans

Mario’s is still very much in demand so there won’t be drastic changes in the future. Why change what ain’t broke, right? Chef Anton said that they might come out with new dishes but their priority is to make Mario’s more accessible and their online presence felt.

Fil Benitez rekindling funny Mario's tales

Fil Benitez is less hands-on now. He has entrusted the Tomas Morato branch to his younger brother Anton.

Take part in an overnight food feast on November 12 as UP JPIA opens the door to their Calle Bistro Event.

Calle Bistro is a revolutionized food sale that would bring together local and foreign cuisines in the metro catering to young professionals and food enthusiasts to unwind, socialize and explore the rich oriental and western flavors. This UP JPIA project aims to assist budding food retail brands and enterprises in promoting their products and to provide a one of a kind food socialization experience where people from different walks of life can get a slice of the world right on their plates. This is a night of food adventure made more special as live bands serenade the visitors as they indulge in Calle Bistro. Games and raffle draws would also make it a night of fun and excitement for everyone.

Proceeds of this project will benefit the UP JPIA Long-term Educational Assistance Program (LEAP) scholarship fund and will provide financial support for UP JPIA’s other socio-civic activities.

UP Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (UP JPIA) is a multi-awarded organization. They take pride in being the sole Hall of Fame awardee and three-time recipient of the most coveted “Gawad Chancellor Award for the Most Outstanding Organization” in the University of the Philippines. They are also branded as the “Most Outstanding Local Chapter” by the National Federation of JPIA three times. Some of the projects that have put them over the top in recent years include Project Activate, a health-consciousness campaign, representing them in the regional finals of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations in the country; TikTakbo, an annual fun run with over 800 runners annually and the Accountancy Students Seminar and Extra-curricular Training (ASSET), a three-day seminar for the top 50 senior and graduating accounting students all over the Philippines.

Calle Bistro will be at the Eastwood CityWalk 2. The event will start at 6 PM and close at 3 AM. Admission is FREE!

Recently, I was invited by Ivan Henares and Robinsons Galleria to sample the exciting new restaurants in Robinsons’ Veranda. If you haven’t been to Robinsons Galleria lately, the mall renovated the side facing Ortigas Avenue and made it into a place for dining and hanging out. Together with some food and travel bloggers, I was able to try almost all the restaurants in the Veranda: Papa John’s, Delicious Kitchen by Eat Well!, Johnny Rockets, La Creperie, Hyphy’s, 8 Spices, Giligan’s, Golden Spoon, and Starbucks. I’ll try to describe what each has to offer and my favorites in the off chance that you, my dear readers, trust my judgement and find yourself hungry in Galleria soon ;-)

food review

Papa John’s is a pizzeria franchise from Jeffersonville, Indiana. They’re famous for, wait for it, pizza! Although they do have calzones, pastas, and side dishes, I haven’t tried any of those so I don’t know if they’re any good but I was able to try 3 pizza variants during the food tour : Fisherman’s Catch, Chicken BBQ, and Super Papa. My favorite was the Fisherman’s Catch which has shrimps and squid besides the usual green peppers and onions. It’s not tomato-based but has a special garlic sauce. I recommend that you get an additional Garlic Dipping Sauce (P20) and Pepperoncini (P20), a mildly spicy pepper, and you’ll be in for a real treat. The pizza costs P300 for the small pie, P430 for medium, and P530 for large. (more…)

City Delivery service

Watering Hole was teeming with people that Tuesday night. There were the regular customers and some of us who were invited.

The host interviews someone from City Delivery

Representatives of City Delivery were there. One of them explained how their delivery service works. She said that there are 2 ways to access them:

Phone

  1. Dial their hotline number 87878.
  2. Choose from a wide variety of cuisines from their restaurant partners.
  3. Place your order.
  4. Enjoy the great tasting dishes.

Internet

  1. Go to http://www.citydelivery.ph/.
  2. Register.
  3. Choose from a wide variety of cuisines from their restaurant partners.
  4. Place your order.
  5. Enjoy the great tasting dishes.

They deliver to the following areas: Makati, The Fort, Greenhills, Ortigas, Eastwood CBD, Pasay, Cainta, Magallanes, Mandaluyong, and some parts of Manila and Quezon City. They also deliver to people who work or reside in areas not included in the list for a higher minimum fee. The minimum fee is P500 pesos  plus 10% for the delivery fee. I think it’s a reasonable price for a hassle-free dining in your own home.

Watering Hole had several activities for us that night. They got DQ band who entertained us while we ate, a photo session of us posing with our favorite Watering Hole dish, and there were games where they gave away Watering Hole and City Delivery gift certificates as prizes.
