Well I’m not sure if it’s the newest but I’m willing to bet the concept is new here. My friend and I decided were looking for desserts after having dinner at B & T. We were driving along Connecticut St. in Greenhills when we saw a nice new building. We were about to enter White [...]

Well I’m not sure if it’s the newest but I’m willing to bet the concept is new here. My friend and I decided were looking for desserts after having dinner at B & T. We were driving along Connecticut St. in Greenhills when we saw a nice new building. We were about to enter White Hat but noticed that there were more shops on the 2nd floor so we decided to explore. We were enticed by the bright and colorful interior so we decided to try Cold Layers. (more…)

I just got back from Singapore and I have Singapore foodie experience to blog about but that will have to wait. For now, I will continue with my Davao Food Appreciation Tour (DFAT) logs.

The afternoon of Day 2 was an adventure for me and some bloggers who participated in DFAT. We tried zipline and some also tried Zorb. After our exhilarating experience, we went to NCCC Mall where Crepelato has a branch.

Crepelato serves homemade fat-free gelato. You’re probably thinking “What’s new with that? There are so many gelato establishments in the Philippines.” Well, let me tell you that Crepelato serves their gelato with a twist. They pair it with brownies, cakes, crepes, and other pastries. There are also the not-so-common gelato flavors like cappuccino and food for the gods. (more…)

Recently, I was invited by Ivan Henares and Robinsons Galleria to sample the exciting new restaurants in Robinsons’ Veranda. If you haven’t been to Robinsons Galleria lately, the mall renovated the side facing Ortigas Avenue and made it into a place for dining and hanging out. Together with some food and travel bloggers, I was able to try almost all the restaurants in the Veranda: Papa John’s, Delicious Kitchen by Eat Well!, Johnny Rockets, La Creperie, Hyphy’s, 8 Spices, Giligan’s, Golden Spoon, and Starbucks. I’ll try to describe what each has to offer and my favorites in the off chance that you, my dear readers, trust my judgement and find yourself hungry in Galleria soon ;-)

Papa John’s

food review

Papa John’s is a pizzeria franchise from Jeffersonville, Indiana. They’re famous for, wait for it, pizza! Although they do have calzones, pastas, and side dishes, I haven’t tried any of those so I don’t know if they’re any good but I was able to try 3 pizza variants during the food tour : Fisherman’s Catch, Chicken BBQ, and Super Papa. My favorite was the Fisherman’s Catch which has shrimps and squid besides the usual green peppers and onions. It’s not tomato-based but has a special garlic sauce. I recommend that you get an additional Garlic Dipping Sauce (P20) and Pepperoncini (P20), a mildly spicy pepper, and you’ll be in for a real treat. The pizza costs P300 for the small pie, P430 for medium, and P530 for large. (more…)

Fate smiled upon us that night. It was already past midnight. We just came from a videoke joint in Jupiter Street and I wanted something sweet. Most of the restaurants and bars were closed for the night so Eloisa suggested we just go to the Starbucks at the end of the road. I was never a Starbucks fan but I needed my dessert fix. We hoped into my car and drove there. I shouted when I saw the establishment next to it. Although it was dark, my eyes zoomed in on the word “chocolatier.” I remember Jane mentioning on plurk about a chocolatier and me replying that I must go there. It hit me that this was the place she was talking about. Eloisa, Faith, and I worried for a bit that the cafe was closed already since it was already late. Fate wanted me to experience Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Cafe because they were still open. I said a quiet thanks for the blessing.

The cafe was dimly lit. Perhaps it was because of the time. The mood lighting makes the place a nice place to go on a date. Sweet words exchanged over sweets. The chocolatier is spacious and is minimally designed with boxy furniture and a curved ceiling. The bar is highlighted with its fanciful chocolate bar tiles and the nice curlicue signage.

chocolate bar tiles at the bar. very clever

I don’t know how the chocolatier looks like during the day but I am guessing it will look really simple without the drama brought about by the mood lighting.

Rating: ★★★★½

Service

Service is fast but there were only a few of us there that night. The waiter was attentive to us and was able to answer our questions. Our orders were brought in a matter of a few minutes.

Rating: ★★★★★

Food

It was hard to choose what to order because all of their offerings seem really good. There are numerous selections of cakes, gelatos, and chocolate liqueur drinks. Eloisa and I decided to share the Golden Euphoria (P250) which is a Ferrero Hazelnut Crunch Cake. The menu describes it as “Tempting Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse on a velvety Chocolate Sponge Cake topped with the enchanting Ferrero Hazelnut.” Sharing was a bad idea because I could finish 1 to 2 slices in one sitting. Faith ordered 3 variants of gelato and they were all good.

The price is steep for a dessert, except for the gelatos which is only around P60 a scoop, but if you want to indulge or want to forget about life’s problems for a while (the heavenly desserts do that) then a night at Maitre Chocolatier Boutique Cafe is worth it.

Rating: ★★★★½

I want to go back to try the other cakes. I hope when I come back I’ll be with a date. Maybe that’s asking too much but maybe Fate will be kind to me once more.
