I recently tried Yabu House of Katsu in Megamall Atrium after reading about the restaurant in other food blogs. The place was packed even on a weekday but I was alone so I was able to get a table fast. I decided to get a Tonkatsu Set which came with Japanese rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, unlimited cabbage with gomatake (sesame dressing) and a small bowl of fruit. When ordering, you have to choose the kind of meat and its size. They have imported “Kurobuta” pork and local ones which are always delivered fresh, never frozen, or so their menu says. The local pork has 2 variants: Rosu which has fat and Hire which is lean. Of course I chose Rosu because I like to live dangerously ;) As for size, there’s 180g, 120g, and 90grams. My Tonkatsu Set is a 180g Rosu which costs P365 (+12% VAT & Service Charge).

roasted sesame

I like the fact that patrons have to grind the roasted sesame seeds. It’s very interactive and the smell of crushed sesame seeds can work up an appetite.

Rosu Katsu Set

Did I like it? Yes I did. It was crunchy and meaty as it should be. The pork is fresh and soft. The batter is okay. The salad is satisfactory. However, I don’t understand why the restaurateurs said that the katsu melts in your mouth. How could breaded pork melt in ones’ mouth? I’d understand if it’s not breaded…maybe I’m just being too literal but I still disagree with their claim. There is also a slight aftertaste. A metallic aftertaste at that. I don’t know if it’s because of the oil or the pork but it makes the dining experience a bit unpleasant.

The redeeming factor is the Himalayan Pink Salt. I love rock salt and I sprinkled the pink Himalayan salt abundantly all over my katsu.

Will I eat there again? Yes, I will if it isn’t crowded.

Recently, I was invited by Ivan Henares and Robinsons Galleria to sample the exciting new restaurants in Robinsons’ Veranda. If you haven’t been to Robinsons Galleria lately, the mall renovated the side facing Ortigas Avenue and made it into a place for dining and hanging out. Together with some food and travel bloggers, I was able to try almost all the restaurants in the Veranda: Papa John’s, Delicious Kitchen by Eat Well!, Johnny Rockets, La Creperie, Hyphy’s, 8 Spices, Giligan’s, Golden Spoon, and Starbucks. I’ll try to describe what each has to offer and my favorites in the off chance that you, my dear readers, trust my judgement and find yourself hungry in Galleria soon ;-)

Papa John’s

food review

Papa John’s is a pizzeria franchise from Jeffersonville, Indiana. They’re famous for, wait for it, pizza! Although they do have calzones, pastas, and side dishes, I haven’t tried any of those so I don’t know if they’re any good but I was able to try 3 pizza variants during the food tour : Fisherman’s Catch, Chicken BBQ, and Super Papa. My favorite was the Fisherman’s Catch which has shrimps and squid besides the usual green peppers and onions. It’s not tomato-based but has a special garlic sauce. I recommend that you get an additional Garlic Dipping Sauce (P20) and Pepperoncini (P20), a mildly spicy pepper, and you’ll be in for a real treat. The pizza costs P300 for the small pie, P430 for medium, and P530 for large. (more…)

I went to Ben’s Burjer just for kicks with some Plurkers. We were curious about it since Ben’s Burjer’s was brought up by former Comelec Chair Ben Abalos during the NBN-ZTE senate investigation. He claimed that his “burjers” are best sellers in Wack Wack Golf and Country Club. Well I wanted to know if it’s as good as he claims so I ordered their most expensive burger at 120 pesos, the Double Cheese Burjer.

Double Cheese Burjer

It took more than 15 minutes to cook the burger and I find the burger small for a double patty burger. At first bite, the patty tasted salty but it was still okay for me. I was famished. I have a big appetite and the burger left me hanging so I ordered another one which again took long to prepare.

Their menu is sparse with only burgers and drinks as choices. I wish they also offer fries or onion rings to accompany their burgers.

As for the establishment, there is ample parking space since it’s situated in a commercial complex. The burger joint is well-lighted but small. The design is very simple, bordering on bare.
